Benefits Of Waste Compaction
It is widely accepted that compacting waste with a commercial or industrial compactor has several benefits for your business when compared to disposing of trash in an open top dumpster. Some of these proven benefits include:
- Reduced space required to remove & store trash
- Smaller burden placed on landfills
- Fewer hauling pulls by trucks
- Lower carbon emissions with fewer pick ups
- Smaller opportunity for pilferage & scavengers
- Reduction in waste odor & vermin
- Fewer fire hazards
- Improved safety & work area conditions
One of the most important benefits not mentioned on this list is the cost savings over time that directly correlates to the compaction ratio of the equipment being used.
What Is Compaction Ratio?
Compaction ratio is waste industry term that refers to reduction of waste and loose space provided by a compactor. It is a proportion that describes the the volume of compacted waste that can be placed in the same storage space occupied by noncompacted waste.
For example, a 2:1 ratio means that a compactor reduces 2 cubic yards of loose waste down to 1 cubic yard of compacted waste.
To calculate compaction ratio, you need to be able to calculate volume of loose trash and compacted trash. Volume of space can be obtained by using the specified volume of a container, such as a 96 gallon bin, or by multiplying the length x width x height dimensions of a container full of trash. The resulting value would be in cubic measurements, i.e. feet, yards, etc.
Then, divide the volume of the loose trash by the volume of the compacted trash to find the compaction ratio. Here are some more examples: 32 cubic feet of loose trash compacted into a 8 cubic feet volume would have a ratio of four, or 4:1. A 96 gallon bin filled with loose trash compacted to a 24 gallon size would also have a four to one compaction ratio.
What does that mean for your business? With most compactors, it means a significant cost savings of up to 70-75% when you factor in reduced hauling fees, space requirements, accessories, and more!
