Baler & compactor Preventive Maintenance
Regularly scheduled maintenance is critical for the long productive service life expected from your baler or compactor. Failure to properly maintain your equipment leads to added repair costs, extended downtime, and safety concerns.
Preventive Maintenance Plans are available on all Harmony Enterprises’ equipment. They are an extremely affordable and convenient way to ensure the long life and reliability of your investment.

What You Can Do: Your regularly scheduled baler and compactor maintenance should include the following items:
- Inspect all nuts and bolts during the first week of use, and then monthly thereafter.
- Check hydraulic oil reservoir for proper oil level with the cylinder fully retracted. Maintain proper oil level in the reservoir with a high quality all-weather hydraulic oil such as Conoco ISO 22 or equivalent for compactors and Conoco MV32 or equivalent for balers. A “Fill to Here” decal is provided to help maintain the proper level. In addition, check for any leakage, kinks, or other damage to the hydraulic hoses and replace if necessary.
- Check the power unit. Keep the power unit clean and free of debris in order to provide a clean airflow around the unit. Wipe all grease, dust, and dirt from the outside of the control box.
- Check that all safety guards and access covers are secure and in the proper condition before operation.
- Grease the lower door hinges and lock assembly with a needlepoint grease gun.
- Check all nut and bolts. Inspect the overall condition of the equipment and the surrounding work area.
- Have a licensed electrician inspect the electrical system. All electrical connections should be examined and the motor amp draw should be checked. Recording successive readings helps prevent future failures.
- Maintain the hydraulic system. Drain and refill the reservoir with high quality all weather hydraulic fluid such as Conoco 5W-20 or equivalent for compactors and Conoco MV32 or equivalent for balers. Check all hoses and connections for leakage or wear and replace if necessary. Change the oil filter after the first 50 hours of operation and every 250 hours thereafter. Modify this schedule if the baler operates in hot, dusty conditions.

- Note the Lock-Out/Tag-Out Procedure in the Safety Section
- Never enter the chamber. Do not put hands or feet in or near the chamber when the machine is in operation. Always disconnect power before servicing machine and place a sign on baler stating “UNDER REPAIR DO NOT USE”.
- It is the responsibility of the employer whose employees are engaged in installing, repairing, adjusting, inspecting, operating, or maintaining the equipment to develop, document, and implement a policy and procedure for locking/tagging out any potentially hazardous energy source. This is of paramount importance and must be completed before any work is done to the equipment.
- Before servicing or entering any part of your equipment, be sure that all sources of potentially hazardous energy have been fully removed. Lock-Out / Tag-Out procedures must be in accordance with OHSA and ANSI requirements.
- Before entering the baler chamber for service, be sure that the platen is securely supported. At minimum use two wooden 4” by 4” beams in good condition. Cut each beam to fit snug in each rear corner of the chamber.
- Never climb on the sides of baler. Use a ladder or platform if the area you need to service cannot be reached from ground level.
