OCC
Old Corrugated Containers continued to strengthen in September, with the national average rising about $10 per ton to approximately $90 per ton. Demand has remained supportive, making OCC one of the stronger recovered-material categories heading into fall.

Mixed Paper
Mixed paper also moved higher this month, increasing about $5 per ton to a national average of roughly $35–$40 per ton. That is also above the approximately $31-per-ton average reported one year ago.

PET
PET continues to face a challenging market. The national average for post-consumer PET beverage bottles and jars is approximately 2.61 cents per pound, essentially unchanged from August but well below the 5.09 cents per pound reported a year ago. For generators, efficient handling and transportation remain especially important when commodity values are this low.

Aluminum UBC
Sorted, baled aluminum beverage cans remain one of the stronger commodities in the recycling stream. September’s national average was approximately 96.56 cents per pound, up slightly for the month and considerably stronger than the 78.44 cents per pound average reported one year ago.

Steel Cans
Sorted, baled steel cans remain steady at approximately $198 per ton, compared with about $158 per ton one year ago. The relatively stable market continues to reward clean, efficiently processed material.

Overall Market
September’s recycling market remains mixed, but recovered fiber is showing encouraging strength. OCC and mixed paper have both improved, aluminum and steel remain relatively solid, and PET continues to struggle with low pricing. Regardless of commodity value, reducing handling, creating dense marketable bales, and maximizing transportation efficiency remain important ways recyclers and material generators can improve the economics of their recycling programs.
