Harmony Recycling Market Pulse: Updated Weekly!
Monday Market Pulse | August 17–21, 2026
OCC: Old Corrugated Containers continue to show a relatively steady market heading into the second half of August. Fiber values strengthened earlier this summer, and while the market is not seeing dramatic upward movement, demand for clean, well-prepared OCC remains supportive. For generators, maintaining a clean corrugated waste stream and producing dense, consistent bales continues to help maximize recycling value.
Mixed Paper: Mixed paper remains comparatively stable after improving earlier this summer. National averages moved into the upper-$20-per-ton range in June, a notable improvement from levels seen earlier in 2026. Quality continues to matter, however, as contamination and transportation costs can significantly affect what recyclers are willing to pay in individual markets.
PET: PET continues to face the most challenging conditions of the major curbside commodities. New August data shows PET bale prices easing to roughly 6–7 cents per pound in the South and Southeast, while Upper Midwest PET is averaging below 3 cents per pound. Distance from major processors and elevated freight costs remain significant challenges for Midwest recyclers, making efficient collection, densification, and transportation especially important.
Aluminum UBC: Used Beverage Cans remain one of the strongest commodities in the recycling stream. Aluminum UBC pricing strengthened into early summer, reaching the low-90-cent-per-pound range nationally, and continues to benefit from strong demand for recycled aluminum. The material’s high recyclability and established domestic end markets continue to make aluminum cans an important revenue-producing commodity for recyclers.
Steel Cans: Steel cans remain relatively steady after strengthening during the spring. Sorted, baled steel cans moved from approximately $158 per ton at the beginning of the year to around $195 per ton by May. Broader scrap-steel markets also remain stronger than a year ago, although prices have experienced some short-term volatility during August.
Overall, the recycling market continues to reward clean material, strong bale density, and efficient transportation. Aluminum and fiber remain comparatively resilient, steel is holding respectable value, and PET continues to demonstrate how quickly regional demand and freight economics can influence commodity pricing.
Market conditions and commodity pricing vary by region, material quality, volume, transportation costs, and individual recycler or mill agreements. This Market Pulse is intended as a general industry snapshot and should not be considered a guaranteed price quote.
