Harmony Recycling Market Pulse: Updated Weekly!
Monday Market Pulse | August 24–28, 2026
OCC: Old Corrugated Containers continue to show measured strength as August comes to a close. OCC values have increased incrementally throughout much of 2026, supported by mill demand and spot-market activity. Although conditions can vary by region, clean, dry OCC with minimal contamination remains well positioned. Producing dense, uniform bales can also improve transportation efficiency and overall marketability.
Mixed Paper: Mixed paper is holding relatively steady following improvements earlier this summer. Demand remains more selective than it is for OCC, making material quality especially important. Loads containing excessive moisture, plastic film or other contaminants may face deductions or rejection. For generators, better separation and consistent bale quality can help protect the material’s value.
PET: PET remains under significant pressure heading into the final week of August. Weak demand, excess supply and reduced domestic processing capacity continue to weigh on bale prices. These conditions are especially challenging in the Upper Midwest, where longer transportation distances can further reduce net material value. Efficient densification and full truckload quantities remain important for controlling freight costs.
Aluminum UBC: Used Beverage Cans continue to be one of the recycling stream’s most valuable commodities. Broader aluminum scrap benchmarks strengthened during the past month and remain above year-ago levels. Strong demand for recycled aluminum and well-established end markets continue to support UBC values, particularly for clean, dry and properly baled material.
Steel Cans: Steel cans remain comparatively stable despite some short-term movement in broader ferrous scrap markets. Values continue to be supported by domestic steelmaking demand, although regional mill activity and transportation costs can influence individual pricing. Removing contaminants and producing dense bales can improve handling efficiency and help generators receive the strongest available return.
Overall, late-summer recycling markets remain mixed. Fiber and aluminum continue to demonstrate relative strength, steel is holding respectable value, and PET remains challenged by weak demand and regional processing limitations. Across every commodity, clean material, consistent bale density and efficient transportation remain essential to protecting recycling value.
Market conditions and commodity pricing vary by region, material quality, volume, transportation costs, and individual recycler or mill agreements. This Market Pulse is intended as a general industry snapshot and should not be considered a guaranteed price quote.
