Harmony Recycling Market Pulse – Updated Weekly!

Harmony Recycling Market Pulse: Updated Weekly!

Monday Market Pulse | August 31–September 4, 2026

OCC: Old Corrugated Containers are entering September with continued positive momentum. The national average for OCC increased another $5 per ton in August to approximately $80–$85 per ton, following several months of gradual improvement. That compares with roughly $67 per ton one year ago. While regional conditions and mill demand still influence individual markets, clean, dry OCC and consistently dense bales remain well positioned. Efficient baling can also increase payloads and reduce transportation cost per ton.

Mixed Paper: Mixed paper also strengthened during August, increasing approximately $5 per ton to a national average of $30–$35 per ton. While still a lower-value fiber grade than OCC, the improvement continues the upward movement seen earlier this summer. Quality remains important because moisture, plastic film and other contamination can quickly reduce the value of a load. Consistent sorting and bale quality can help generators capture the strongest available return.

PET: PET remains the most challenged commodity in this week’s Market Pulse. The national average for post-consumer PET beverage bottles and jars fell from approximately 3.20 cents per pound in July to 2.63 cents per pound in August, compared with 5.75 cents per pound one year ago. Weak pricing reinforces the importance of reducing handling and transportation costs wherever possible. For higher-volume generators, dense bales, efficient liquid removal and full truckload quantities can become especially important when commodity values are low.

Aluminum UBC: Used Beverage Cans remain a bright spot in the recycling stream. The national average for sorted, baled UBCs held near 93.75 cents per pound in August, well above the approximately 78 cents per pound reported a year earlier. Broader aluminum markets also remain supported by strong demand and constrained domestic supply. For recyclers and generators, clean, dry and properly densified UBCs continue to offer strong recycling value.

Steel Cans: Steel cans remained largely stable through August, averaging approximately $198 per ton, compared with $158 per ton one year ago. Broader U.S. ferrous scrap markets also entered August with expectations for relatively balanced supply and demand and limited month-to-month movement. Regional mill demand and freight costs can still affect individual pricing, making dense, contamination-free bales important for efficient handling and transportation.

Overall, the recycling market enters September with a noticeable divide between commodity groups.
Recovered fiber continues to improve, aluminum and steel remain relatively strong, while PET continues to face substantial pricing pressure. For generators, this makes operational efficiency increasingly important. Producing clean material, maximizing bale density and reducing transportation and handling costs can help protect recycling value regardless of where commodity markets move next.

Market conditions and commodity pricing vary by region, material quality, volume, transportation costs, and individual recycler or mill agreements. This Market Pulse is intended as a general industry snapshot and should not be considered a guaranteed price quote.
