World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a global initiative created by the United Nations to raise awareness about sustainability and to promote action to protect the global environment. It is celebrated annually on June 5th. A different country is chosen to host the event each year, bringing many different types of stakeholders to the table to address challenges and create tangible, long lasting solutions to pollution, climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. This year’s host nation is The Republic of Korea and the theme is Putting an End to Plastic Pollution, which will focus on the impacts of plastic waste and drive action to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink the use of plastics. By drawing inspiration from nature and showcasing real-world solutions, the campaign will encourage individuals, organizations, industries, and governments to adopt sustainable practices that drive systemic change. This year’s World Environment Day comes exactly two months before countries meet again to continue negotiating a global treaty to end plastic pollution.

What Can You Do?

What can you do to help reduce plastic waste and improve your local community? The United Nations Environment Programme encourages everyone to take action, including steps to protect and preserve the natural world. This includes adopting sustainable practices in daily life, like a local recycling program or donating to reclamation facilities in your area. It also means becoming an active influence with your local government regarding environmental policies, especially those that deal with mitigating waste and recycling, such as plastics. You could also spearhead activities like educational campaigns, community clean-ups, recycling drives, tree planting, and more!

What Can Your Business Do?

What can your business do as part of our global shared responsibility to care for the environment? One easy place to start is to put sustainability practices into place, baling recyclable commodities, sparing them from the waste stream while providing reusable products at fractions of the cost.
