Warehouse Trash Compactors
Warehouses and distribution centers regularly generate waste in the form of recyclable operational by-products. We have several posts that feature large recycling balers designed to handle these types stubborn plastics, shrink wrap, non-ferrous metals, foam, and cardboard. But what about waste that can’t be recycled in warehouses? Should they just be thrown into an open-top dumpster to be emptied several times a month and added to the landfill? The answer is a resounding NO! Keep reading to learn why warehouses are choosing to use trash compactors and what types are available for your warehouse or distribution center.
Why Use Warehouse Trash Compactors?
The waste created in warehouses is often big and bulky. When not disposed of properly, it can create safety hazards for employees, fire hazards for the buildings, and inflated costs due to the size of the material and need for increased hauling of open top dumpsters. The benefits of using a warehouse trash compactor are many. They include, but are not limited to:
- Reduced hauling expenses: Warehouse trash compactors help to reduce the footprint created by waste up to 4X its normal size. That means that you can get up to 75% more material in your compactors before they need to be empty, potentially saving up to 75% on hauling expenses and requiring 75% less space in the landfill!
- Handle a variety of types of waste: Depending on the type of wet or dry waste being generated in a warehouse, there is a specific type of trash compactor designed and capable of handling it.
- Reduce fire hazards and promote clean working areas: Because warehouse compactors can handle 4X of a multitude of types of waste, using them naturally helps to reduce or eliminate fire hazards created by stacks of waste, as well as promoting cleaner, more safe work areas throughout the warehouse.
- Reduce odor: Trash can be a smelly business. Compactors help to secure waste and when couple with deodorizing granules, help to reduce, if not eliminate odor from waste.
- Reduce vermin and pests: Warehouse trash compactors are enclosed and help to keep out vermin and pests typically associated with open top solutions.
- Safe & Easy To Use – Operation is safe and easy with minimal training. These types of trash compactors also help to reduce employee pilferage!
Different Types of Warehouse Trash Compactors
While there are several types of commercial compactors available for all kinds of businesses, there are basically two types of larger volume compactors used in the warehouse or distribution center setting, stationary and self-contained (roll-off) compactors.
Stationary compactors are trash compactors that compact dry waste and have a container attached to them during the compaction process. These containers are unhooked or disconnected when they need to be emptied and either carried off to be emptied or dumped into a hauling truck on site and returned back to the compactor.
Warehouses typically use larger sized stationary compactors like Harmony’s C200 or C300, in combination with larger containers like a 30 yard container.
They can be fed a multitude of ways, including by ground, rear or side chute, hopper, offset hopper, walk-on deck, drive-on deck, or side load tipper.
Self-contained compactors used in commercial settings like restaurants or hotels handle both wet and dry waste and typically consist of Harmony’s P4FL and P6FL. Larger versions of self-contained compactors known as “roll off” compactors are often desired by warehouses to handle large quantities of waste.
These compactors have the containers permanently attached to the compactor and are emptied by a hook on the chassis of the machine, loading it onto a truck to be emptied. These also usually range in size from 20 yards up to 45 yards in size.
