Harmony Celebrates STEAM Week 2021
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics in an educational context. STEAM-related learning is important in schools, business, and home, as it provides an opportunity learn life skills and disciplines that are in high demand in a variety of job fields. Harmony Enterprises and Harmony Kids Learning Center have collaboratively celebrated it for the past five years. Steam week 2021 was no exception!
Measuring Up To The Challenge!
This year, an educational tour was offered to a group of 17 HKLC students by President, Steve Cremer and New Business Development Manager, Lane Powell. Our steam week 2021 focused on the concept of measurement. The students learned what measurement is, the different types of tools that can be use to measure things like components, steel, wire, and more in the manufacturing of our quality balers and compactors. They got to see first-hand our dedicated employees using these tools in their various departments to assist with precision measurement. It’s this standard of precision and excellence that helps lead to Harmony’s longevity and operational efficiency of our wide range of waste and recycling solutions.
The steam week 2021 tour started with an introduction of what the kids do at HKLC and what we do at Harmony Enterprises. The students were all given a footlong flexible plastic ruler with color coded segments for each 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 inch increment. They measured Smarty the SmartPack USB devices, prototype compactor in our Engineering department, saw the drill press using consistent jigging in the machine area, steel being measured and cut on the burn table and bent on the brake press. They also observed welder measuring and marking steel for weldments, the shipping area employees measuring boxes for pick up and delivery, and our panel build workers measuring wire for our electrical boxes. Finally, our maintenance supervisor, Travis McCabe, spent time with the students, showing how each of our tools are regularly calibrated to ensure that we continually meet our stringent ISO 9001:2015 standards.
Throughout the tour, the students were allowed and encouraged to measure parts, products, and more. Following the day, each participating classroom was given activity worksheets to help them apply what they learned during the measurement unit. That was not a problem, though, as they enthusiastically were measuring just about everything in the learning center out of excitement and curiosity!
Harmony Enterprises is proud to continue to collaborate with HKLC and live out our core purpose of career, community, and culture. We would like to thank our employees for their help in welcoming the students to our facility as well as the teachers at HKLC for their daily dedication to improving the lives of the families they serve.
