Standardizing Baler Excellence At Harmony
Harmony Enterprises has decades of experience designing, building, and improving upon our space-saving vertical baler solutions. Harmony’s vertical recycling balers provide years of long-lasting efficient and cost-saving operation. Our future-focused Engineering Department is always looking for ways to provide enhanced value and performance for our customers. They have done it again, staying ahead of the curve with the creation of Harmony’s “legion” electrical box, which helps to further standardize baler excellence and provide baler diagnostics on vertical balers from Harmony.
Features & Benefits of Harmony’s Legion Box
Harmony’s legion box is an updated universal controls electrical box with several new features and benefits. Working with our long-time partner, Van Meter, we have created an electrical box design with increased functionality that will soon help to standardize even more excellence across our non-automated vertical baler line in 2025, from our M30STD small recycling baler, all the way up to our M72HD High Density Baler. Harmony will deploy a custom roll out of this box across this line throughout the calendar year. With this box, customers will find the baler easier to operate while reducing downtime and potential first-call service trips with machine diagnostics.
Engineering Manager, Isaac Kruse shared his excitement about this new smart baler design, saying, “We are pleased to present the Harmony Legion box, a new addition to our equipment offerings. This solution aims to streamline our equipment’s controls, enhance our real-time troubleshooting diagnostics, and optimize our customer experience!”
What’s new on the legion box? In addition to the keyed selector switch, the “Up” and “Down” buttons, and E-Stop, this box has a status light troubleshooting guide that informs the user of several important conditions.
These include:
- Ready to Run (All Switches Set) – this informs the operator that the baler has power and all of the safety switches are in a state that will allow the baler to operate per its design.
- Bale Full – This lets the user know that the baling chamber is full and to start the bale tying and ejection process.
- E-Stop Engaged – This reminds employees that the E-Stop is engaged, permitting operation of the baler.
- Doors Not Closed – This tells the operator that either the upper loading door or main chamber lower door is not closed. This will trigger safety switches that prohibit operation of the baler or platen movement.
- Motor Running (No Movement) – This helps to diagnose that there is power to the baler and that the motor is running but not moving. This is a great aid in troubleshooting initial issues.
- Hand Operations – This reminds the user that the baler is currently in “hand” operation mode in which operational controls must be held for the duration of the desired movement.
- Auto Operations – This reminds the user that the baler is currently in “automatic” operation mode in which operational controls will allow a full cycle or operation to occur with just the touch of the operational control.
- Upper Limit Failure – This PLC diagnostic helps to determine if the upper limit switch has failed in any way. To reset this alert condition, the key switch must be in the “off” position for one minute. Knowing that an upper limit switch has failed will allow you to order a new part and have it installed during the first and only technician visit, rather than requiring a first trip to triage the baler. This helps to reduce downtime and costs!
- Pressure Switch Failure – Similar in benefit to the upper limit switch failure, the pressure switch failure helps to monitor the state of the pressure switches. Should one fail, you will know in advance and be able to order the necessary parts prior to a service call.
- Movement In Bale Full (With Door Open) – When the machine reaches bale full, it will stay in this state until the full bale is removed and the logic is reset.
In the past, conditions like an upper limit or pressure switch failure would have to be detected by a technician first-visit service call, then parts would need to be ordered, and the tech would have to return to install the parts on the baler. Now, switches can either be adjusted with the help of Harmony tech support, or the tech can show up with the correct parts for repair on the first trip, reducing both down time and travel/labor charges!
“We are pleased to present the Harmony Legion box, a new addition to our equipment offerings. This solution aims to streamline our equipment’s controls, enhance our real-time troubleshooting diagnostics, and optimize our customer experience!”
