Working Toward No Waste
Companies all around the world are looking for ways to reduce waste and the stress it places on our environment. Many businesses look to recoup revenue through recycling processes using Harmony recycling balers. Recyclers pay top dollar for bales of recyclable materials that can be repurposed into reusable raw materials. But, there are times that companies find creative ways to move toward producing no waste throughout their entire waste handling process, regardless of profit. This post features one of those companies, Pepin Distributing in Tampa, Fl.
The Pepin Distributing Story
Pepin is one of the nation’s leading distributors of products ranging from leading local, national and import brewers, plus wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Incorporated in 1963, Pepin has a long history of exceeding customer expectations by adding value adding value to the products and people they serve, continued growth and industry leadership, community involvement, a superior quality of life, the highest level of integrity, pride and dedication to their tradition of excellence.
Part of that tradition of excellence includes the way they manage the waste by-products of their production and manufacturing processes. As a large scale operation, Pepin generates a large amount of cardboard and plastics, as well as wood pallets.
Rather than throwing these items in the waste stream, Pepin Distributing partners with NuCycle Energy on their recycling program out of Plant City, FL where they turn the recyclable products into alternative fuel for manufacturing plants.
Using four different space-saving Harmony vertical recycling balers, Pepin is able to mix cardboard and plastics together in the same bale, which keeps their drivers from having to separate the different items. They send their broken pallets and pieces of wood on the same truckloads, keeping those items out of the landfill also. As part of their no waste initiative, even the residual ash from the fuel cubes ends up in black top for road improvements!
With the powerful force and large capacity of one Harmony M72HD High Density Baler and three M60STD 60″ Balers, Pepin averages three to four bales a day of this mixed product. They haul a full truckload of these bales about every two weeks, weighing approximately 10 tons per load.
According to Facilities Operations Manager, Jim Hiestand, “We do not profit from this recycling process, our docks are clean of all debris, and there is zero waste when all is said and done.” Not only are they recycling to reduce all waste, but with their four Harmony balers, they continue to improve workplace functionality and safety.
“We do not profit from this recycling process, our docks are clean of all debris, and there is zero waste when all is said and done.”
