For businesses that accumulate or produce a large quantity of recyclable waste, such as scrap metal, aluminum, plastic, shrink wrap, paper, or cardboard, having a streamlined process in place to manage that waste is key. Utilizing proper equipment such as automatic balers and a well-planned approach can help keep work spaces clean and safe, while allowing you to turn your “trash” materials into a revenue stream.
What is an Automatic Baler?
All of Harmony Enterprises’ Vertical Balers have an automatic feature to them in some way or another. The action of the cylinder compressing the material into the chamber is hydraulic power at work.

What makes an automatic baler, by definition, is its ability to create bales without manual manipulation of the commodity or control box every time the chamber is full. For this purpose, Harmony offers two downstroke vertical baler models, the S60XDRC and the T60XDRC. Both of these durable balers can be configured to be front or rear fed, with, or without a conveyor. When a conveyor is not desired, other systems like blow-in systems or overhead conveyors, can be wired into our balers.

How do automatic balers work?
Material is loaded onto the conveyor or blow-in system and transported to the baler and dumped automatically into the chamber. When the photo-eye sensor detects that the chamber is full, the platen is automatically engaged to compress the material. This is repeated until the “bale full” light is illuminated and baler shuts off in order for the bale to be manually tied off and ejected. Harmony’s T60XDRC has an optional hydraulic ejection cylinder.
An auto-tie baler refers to a horizontal baler configuration in which the process is fully automated. Materials that require a shearing process, like larger pieces of cardboard, are brought to the machine in the same way. They are run through the shear points and dropped into the chamber. The bales are automatically made without a stoppage in the baling process. After the bale is created, the horizontal automatic baler can automatically tie the bale off and eject it onto a rolling conveyor for shipment.
How can an Automatic Baler be used to improve process flow?
Automatic balers are a key part of the process flow for recycling centers and businesses that recycle in larger quantities. Without the ability to automatically transfer recyclable commodities to the hopper, fill the chamber, and cycle until the bale can be tied off, businesses would be forced to use a great deal more labor than is necessary. The automation of this process ensures greater efficiency, as well as safety, for workers in these areas.
How can baled recyclable materials be used to support business revenue & Lower costs?
The streamlining of the process created by the use of an automatic baler allows for a higher quantity of recyclable product to be shipped faster, resulting in an increase of cash flow for businesses. The savings in labor allows your staff to spend their time on other, more important work.
Automatic balers also free up valuable floor space in assembly or shipping areas for products to be manufactured or transported to customers. Statistics show that the value of recyclable commodities currently thrown into the waste stream in the United States is worth $7,000,000,000.
