More Than An Aluminum Recycling Company
Watauga Opportunities, Inc. (WOI) is a manufacturing company located in Boone, North Carolina. Their mission is to enable self-reliance and enhance independence through the provision of vocational, residential, and community opportunities to individuals with disabilities as well as barriers to employment and community involvement.
The important work that WOI does includes Community Activities, Employment Transitions, Supported Employment, Evaluation and Work Adjustment, and other Innovative Services. Their agency supports individuals to maximize their independence in order to live and work in their chosen community. Industries partner with their agency to provide vocational opportunities for their participants.
WOI has two divisions, including a Production/Manufacturing Division and a Programs/Services Division. They manufacture a variety of products, including thin gauge thermoforming, disposable medical devices, and packaging/assembly products.
Helping People AND The Environment
Funding their ongoing operations is no easy task. WOI utilizes an aluminum recycling program as a way to help subsidize the programs and services they offer. They recently needed to replace their old baler with a durable and affordable new piece of recycling equipment. Working with Harmony Enterprises, WOI was able to purchase a new M30HD Vertical Baler to recycle their aluminum.
According to AO Director, Joye Graybeal, “Cost savings on equipment equates to more support for the individuals and community we serve!”

Watauga contracts with a local industry, United Chemi-Con, which is North America’s largest manufacturer of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. WOI trainees complete several processes in order to salvage useable aluminum which is then baled and shipped for recycling.
Graybeal continues, “We have worked together for approximately 40 years to not only provide training and employment options for people with disabilities, BUT also to save thousands of pounds of aluminum from landfills through our aluminum recycling program through the use of balers! It is our plan to continue this valuable work with our new Harmony baler!”

Graybeal concludes, “With the purchase of the new Harmony M30HD we anticipate an increase in efficiency allowing a quicker product turn-around and the potential to recycle an even greater volume of product!”
