MSP Airport Expands SmartPack Rollout for Smarter Waste Management
Harmony Enterprises is proud to support Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport’s continued modernization with a phased rollout of SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors.
The first installation was completed in MSP’s D Pod, with the next group of SmartPacks scheduled for the F Concourse later this month and additional installations expected to follow. The project combines modernized compaction equipment, custom vinyl wrapping, and connected Insite™ technology to help MSP improve waste management and make more efficient use of staff time.
Modern Waste Compaction Designed for Busy Airports
Airports generate significant waste across food courts, gate areas, terminal walkways, and other high-traffic spaces. Traditional receptacles can fill quickly, requiring employees to repeatedly check containers and replace liners throughout the day.
Harmony’s modernized SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors address these challenges at the point of disposal. Each unit occupies approximately the same amount of floor space as a conventional trash receptacle while providing a compaction ratio of up to 11:1.
One compacted SmartPack waste cube can replace approximately 10 to12 traditional 25-gallon bags of trash. This helps reduce liner consumption, prevent overflowing receptacles, limit unnecessary collection rounds, and decrease the time employees spend handling waste.
SmartPack features include:
- A sanitary, no-touch automatic loading door
- Quiet, 10-second compaction cycles
- A durable, no-rust stainless steel chamber
- Adjustable waste-cube weights
- Clear LED operating-status indicators
- A portable, wheeled waste cube for easier removal
- ADA-compliant operation
- A compact footprint for customer-facing spaces
These features make SmartPack well suited for airports and other facilities where appearance, cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency are essential.
Custom Vinyl Wraps Complement the MSP Environment
Waste equipment in an airport must perform reliably while also complementing the appearance and passenger experience of the facility.
The SmartPacks included in the MSP rollout feature custom vinyl wraps created specifically for the airport environment. The finished units blend naturally into the terminals while maintaining a clean, consistent, and professional appearance.
Custom wrapping allows facilities to coordinate waste equipment with surrounding décor, existing branding, wayfinding, or sustainability messaging. It transforms an essential piece of operational equipment into a professional extension of the public environment.
Insite Connects Waste Equipment With Airport Operations
Each SmartPack is equipped with Harmony Insite™ equipment monitoring, giving MSP personnel real-time visibility into fullness levels, equipment status, usage patterns, and conditions requiring attention.
Insite data is integrated into MSP’s broader operational data systems, making waste equipment part of the airport’s overall facility and asset-management strategy. This connected approach can help airport teams:
- Identify which SmartPacks are ready to be emptied
- Reduce unnecessary physical equipment checks
- Respond more quickly when a unit requires attention
- Understand waste volume and usage patterns
- Improve collection routes and staff scheduling
- Support preventive maintenance
- Inform future equipment placement
Traditional waste collection often depends on fixed schedules or employees physically checking receptacles. This can result in staff visiting containers that are not yet full while higher-volume areas require attention.
With automated Insite alerts and reporting, MSP personnel can service SmartPacks based on actual operating conditions. This just-in-time approach reduces unnecessary collection rounds, helps maintain clean terminal areas, and allows employees to focus on other important responsibilities.
As the rollout grows, historical and real-time data from multiple terminal areas will provide an increasingly complete view of waste activity across MSP. Airport teams can use that information to identify trends, compare locations, and continually improve how staff and equipment are deployed.
A Scalable Approach to Airport Waste Management
The combination of SmartPack and Insite transforms a traditionally reactive process into a connected, data-driven operation. SmartPack reduces waste volume at its source, while Insite provides the operational intelligence needed to improve how and when that waste is handled.
Beginning with the D Pod, expanding into the F Concourse later this month, and continuing with additional installations to follow, MSP’s rollout provides a scalable model for modern airport waste management.
At each rollout or gate deployment area, MSP is pairing one SmartPack for trash with another dedicated to recyclable materials. This consistent, side-by-side placement makes proper disposal more convenient and intuitive for travelers while helping the airport keep recyclables separated from the general waste stream. Both units provide the same compact footprint, automatic operation, custom vinyl wrapping, and connected monitoring capabilities, creating a coordinated waste and recycling station that supports cleaner terminal spaces and more efficient material management.
Harmony Enterprises has supplied SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors to airports and other high-traffic facilities across the United States. The latest MSP project builds on that experience with modernized equipment, customized aesthetics, and integration into the airport’s broader data systems.
Manufactured in Harmony, Minnesota, SmartPack combines durable construction, quiet operation, a small footprint, and connected monitoring in a solution designed for demanding public environments.
Harmony is proud to help MSP Airport optimize waste handling, improve staff efficiency, and create a cleaner experience for travelers and employees. We look forward to sharing more as the SmartPack rollout continues throughout the airport.
