What Are Commercial Recycling Solutions?
The most common type of commercial recycling solutions are recycling balers. Recycling balers are hydraulic machines that compress waste material into a much smaller footprint. The end user can them tie them into a manageable bale for easy stacking or transport to recyclers. Because most of a business’s waste can have value, balers are used in many industries such as retail stores, grocery stores, manufacturing facilities, schools and universities, recycling centers, hospitals, restaurants, and more!
Types Of Commercial Recycling Solutions
There are basically three types of recycling balers and they are named for their orientation or function: vertical balers, horizontal balers, and liquid extraction or product destruction balers.
Vertical Balers – These are created with a vertical, space saving design and operate in a downstroke motion. Vertical Balers range in size from 30″ to 72″ and can be manually fed or conveyor fed, depending on volume and type of product being recycled.
They are typically the most budget friendly option for businesses and require the least amount of operational space and energy consumption. With vertical balers, operators stop the machine once the bale chamber is full and manually tie the bale.
The bale is then ejected by a lever or hydraulic strap or chain eject and removed with a pallet jack or forklift. Harmony manufactures 14 different models of vertical balers for just about every need.
Horizontal Balers – These larger balers take up more space, but can naturally handle a larger volume of product. Many horizontal balers automatically cycle and some even automatically tie the bale. There are closed end manual tie balers, two-ram horizontal balers, and auto tie horizontal balers. All three have different use cases and are frequently used in places like distribution centers, paper mills, and scrap yards. Because many horizontal balers are continuously fed, most utilize shear blade technology that keeps the balers from jamming during the cycling process. Horizontal balers are often integrated as part of an extensive recycling system that includes conveyors, hoppers, tippers, and more.
Liquid Extraction/Product Destruction Balers – These commercial recycling solutions can be both vertical or horizontal in design and be manually, conveyor, hopper, or tipper fed. Liquid extraction and product destruction balers first perforate aluminum, PET, or TetraPak containers, drain the residual out-of-spec product into a stainless steel reservoir, pump it out according to local regulations, and then create dense bales of the leftover material to be recycled. These machines significantly reduce the labor FTE’s needed to manage inventory and protect brand identity. They are used by breweries, food and beverage manufacturers, health and beauty product companies, and contract packagers.
