When a person thinks about the equipment that a business needs to be successful and efficient, a cardboard baler is usually not one of the first things that comes to mind. Often tucked away in the back room and hidden from customers, a cardboard baler helps to keep a business’ stock room clean of bulky boxes that can take up precious space. Here are three organizations who are currently using a vertical baler for cardboard recycling.
Cardboard Baler and Recycling Success Stories
Fareway Stores
With 100 grocery stores across Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Nebraska, maintaining the recycling and trash for Fareway Stores is no easy task. But they have the equipment, systems, and staff in place to make it efficient. Leo Hickey, who has been responsible for the “In Store” maintenance since 1993 explains, “Each of the 100 Fareway Stores has one M60MD Baler for baling recyclable cardboard… Our warehouse recycles cardboard, plastic, and aluminum.” With the commitment to their green recycling and waste management initiatives, Fareway Stores has made huge strides that benefit both their company and the environment. “All of our qualified employees are able to use the balers because they are simple and straightforward to operate,” Leo goes on, “Last year, as a company, we recycled 9000 tons of cardboard.” In addition to the positive impact to Mother Earth, the landfill fees that Fareway Stores has saved is enormous.

ReStore Habitat for Humanity
ReStore collects building materials and home improvement supply donations – anything from lumber and tools to doors and appliances, as long as they are clean and functional. ReStore purchased two of the M60CB Cardboard balers – one for use in their current New Brighton, MN store, and one for the new Minneapolis, MN Store that is scheduled to open soon. Jill Carmody, ReStore Store Manager explained, “Many of the smaller donations we receive, such as tools, arrive at the ReStore Donation Door in a cardboard box. Prior to getting the baler, we flattened the cardboard and included it in with our construction waste, which is sorted and recycled. Now, with the cardboard baler, we have a desired single source solution for our high volume of cardboard we receive.”

Channel One Regional Food Bank
Channel One Food Bank has wanted to invest in a cardboard baler for a long time, but simply did not have space. Finally, they were able to complete a building expansion that doubled the space in their warehouse. The cardboard baler at Channel One has already made a significant difference, especially in space savings. Ed Stites, Operations Director at Channel One explained, “Before we got the cardboard baler, we would have several totes at the end of the food shelf aisle full of cardboard. We would fill up the cardboard dumpster, and then get backed up. The cardboard would have to be picked up 3-4 times a week.” Now with the M60CB cardboard baler in the warehouse, the bulky totes have been eliminated and efficiency has increased. Ed explains, “It is amazing how much the cardboard compacts. We have so much space savings because the cardboard that previously filled up seven totes worth of floor space now fits in one cardboard bale. We anticipate our waste hauling bill to be cut in half.”
