Plastic Waste Is A Global Problem
Single use plastics are designed to for one time use and disposal. One of the most common types of single use plastics is packaging. Nearly half of all plastic waste comes from packaging containers. Over 8 million metric tons of plastic waste end up in our world’s oceans every year.
Not alarmed yet? By 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Plastic recycling is not a regional or political issue. It is something that affects the entire planet, today.
As a country located on the Northeast coast of Central America, Honduras’ inhabitants have witnessed the polluting of the Caribbean Sea with plastic waste firsthand.
Invema – A Honduras Company At The Heart Of Recycling
Invema is a company located in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, in the Northwest part of the country, near Guatemala and Belize. This innovative recycling company is closing the loop on recycling. Both Invema, and the inhabitants of Honduras, recognize the threat presented by plastic pollution and are taking recycling very seriously.
In Honduras, recycling is a way of living. It provides a way of living for thousands of residents, especially those from villages and mountainous regions. These local entrepreneurs use the collection and selling of plastics to Invema to pay for school, energy, housing, water, clothing, and more.
Invema works with the population to recycle all non- organic waste generated by their society to provide efficient, profitable, and environmental friendly solutions for recycling.
Plastic is a byproduct of petroleum, and its value fluctuates with the market. The people of Honduras are dependent on the value that quality plastic brings to the end user.
Since plastic can be used infinite times, there is a real benefit to recycling it. However, this demands that each step in the recycling process yield a high quality plastic flake and byproduct.
How Invema Does It
Invema collects PET bottles from local recyclers and grinds it into flakes and extrudes it to Food Grade Recycle PET Sheet. These PET plastic flakes and Sheet are then sold to companies who use them in recycling and extrusion processes to recreate usable packaging containers and other desired products. Those containers are then sold to food, beverage, and other companies needing to package their goods for consumption and use.
To achieve this, Invema recognizes that their PET plastic flakes and Sheet must be of a high enough quality for the next end user to purchase. In order to help change the stigma behind recycled packaging, Invema invests in the most modern technologies to create high quality PET Plastic Recycled products.
According to their own mission, Invema, “strives to invest in the most modern technology to be able to process and trade scrap in the most efficient way. Our every day goal is to provide our suppliers with the best market for their scrap and to deliver to our customers eco-friendly products on time with quality they can trust.”
These efforts provide their customers not only with high quality Recycle PET Plastic products, but lead to greater efficiency and cost effective ways to process recycled plastics. Invema does not only recycle plastics, they also recycle non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, batteries, cardboard, paper, and e-waste.
As a business that practices complete sustainability, Invema uses a great deal of solar panels to provide power to their massive production facility.
How Harmony Helps
Harmony Enterprises is proud to partner with Invema, to provide them with affordable, efficient vertical balers essential for handling the high volume of PET in their operations.
Invema utilizes several of Harmony’s M30HD Vertical Balers and T60XDRC Automatic Vertical Balers with conveyors to bale their products for transport.
The small 30″ balers provide a durable, heavy duty baling solution for PET in areas where space is a premium. The ability for them to be implemented in virtually any setting, make them the ideal solution for Invema in remote locations.
The larger T60XDRC gives Invema maximum efficiency in areas where large volume is an important consideration.
“We are looking to achieve the highest possible of collection of Plastic PET Bottles in Honduras, by making Recycling easy for consumers, by bringing Recycling centers to Schools, Neighborhoods, and various villages around the country. Harmony Balers, with their model M30HD, provides us with the most efficient solution to bale these bottles, to be the most cost effective during transport to our main processing facility. We are also giving our independent suppliers the Harmony M30HD Balers at not cost, so they can lower their transport cost as well, and keep making Recycling a mean for a better way of living for them.” -George Gatlin, Invema General Director
Harmony Enterprises recognizes the scale and importance of the vital recycling work being done by Invema and the people of Honduras. We are proud to play a role in their efforts and wish them continued success.
