Floodwood Services and Training (FST) is a Floodwood, Minnesota based organization that began in 1977 in response to community members desiring a place for their children with disabilities to enrich their lives. The program was first housed in a local church basement. But, as demand for services grew, so did FST. They now serve the communities of Meadowlands, Canyon, Cromwell, Brookston, Saginaw, and Swan River.
Since that time, this progressive and compassionate corporation has developed three sustainable programs to benefit both their member participants and the greater community. These programs include Day Training & Habilitation, Adult Day Services, and Pre-Vocational/Supported Employment (PVBE).
PVSE serves over 35 individuals and allows them to work and remain as independent as possible. These talented employees work on chore crews that perform much needed tasks such as lawn mowing, shoveling, raking, laundry, dishes, janitorial services, and recycling.
Recently, FST’s recycling program received a flood of support in local recycling donations. The response to this program was so overwhelming that FST could not keep up with volume of recyclables it was receiving.
One of the commodities that Floodwood was receiving in large quantity was plastics. Plastic can be recycled and redeemed for additional revenue, when sorted and baled properly. However, not all recycling balers are suited for the stress and volume created when making a bale of plastic. Recyclers also prefer a 60″ mill-sized bale that does not require additional work or expense in being broken down by the hauler.
FST needed a 60″ vertical baler solution that fit these parameters, as well as one that provided the highest quality for the lowest Total Cost of Ownership. Since puchasing their new baler, FST has been able to keep up with their demand and assist their employees with their recycling efforts.

According to Program Director, Chris Tommila, “We initially chose Harmony because they were in state and the best price. We saved storage space in our facility as we no longer have to store recyclables in boxes and bins as they wait to be loaded into a baler. It has saved employee time by not having to move material to and from various areas multiple times.”
The M60STD is a space-saving and durable baler that performs in the harshest of environments. It is a favorite of recycling centers due to its ability to bale a variety of commodities with ease.
