What’s a two ram baler? How are they different from other vertical or horizontal recycling balers? Why are two ram balers used in recycling and what types of businesses benefit from using them? If you want to know the answers to these questions and the two ram balers offered by Harmony, read on!
Two Ram Balers

Two ram balers, like Harmony’s HM-2R185 are often conveyor fed, gravity fed, or fed with pneumatic systems.
A two ram baler is a horizontal recycling baler designed to handle high volumes of recyclables. With the ability to pack more material into every bale, two ram balers put forth high bale densities to maximize baling, storage, and shipping efficiency.
They are typically used in distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, recycling centers, transfer stations, printing companies, & paper conversion complexes. They are designed for harder to bale materials like PET, HDPE, aluminum cans, and non ferrous metals, as the bales are better contained inside the chamber until the they need to be tied and ejected. But, they also easily handle commodities like cardboard, magazines, newspaper, office paper, tin cans, and other types of recyclable plastics.
Two ram horizontal balers differ from single ram balers in one main way. Single ram balers have one ram or platen and cylinder, while two ram balers utilize to rams or platens and cylinders. It makes sense that two ram compression against the surface area of a bale is greater than that of a single ram where the material is squeezed in the chamber as it passes through. The result of using two rams creates more dense bales and the ability to process resistant material and a greater amount of recyclable material faster.
Two ram balers are typically manufactured with extra large feeder hoppers that can be fed by gravity, pneumatic, or conveyor fed devices. Because they are completely enclosed, the heavily reinforced baling chamber allows for ease of processing of a wide range of valuable commodities. With these integrated feeding systems, these machines are automated for even greater efficiency.
Harmony’s HM-2R185 – The Gold Standard!
Harmony’s HM-2R185 Two Ram Horizontal Baler is the industry gold standard when it comes to two ram recycling balers. The HM-2R185 is a two ram horizontal baler that has a built in shear that eliminates the need to precondition materials. After each bale is made, the chamber completely clears. This also allows you to switch materials without stopping operation and prevents contamination of bale materials.
Using either Accent 470 or L.P. Pinnacle II wire-tie systems, the bale gets tied underneath and the short way: saving wire, increasing bale density and holding bales together better during transportation. This adds up to time and money savings!
The benefits of this amazing baler don’t stop there. The HM-2R185 provides the largest hopper, the highest ram face pressure, and the most durable interlocking chassis construction, and most advanced high pressure hydraulics in its class!
The HM-2R185 is ideal for high volume applications requiring a shear blade, creating bales measuring 30″ x 60″ x 38-51″ (variable length), weighing up to 1,500 lbs. short stroke / 1,600 lbs. long stroke (OCC). Its extra large 54×48″ feed opening and incredible 187,468 lbs. of ram force allow it to create extremely dense bales of the following weights (tons per hour):
- Magazines: 2,000 lbs. (9)
- Newspaper: 1,500 lbs. (8)
- Office Paper: 1,600 lbs. (8)
- Aluminum Cans: 700 lbs. (2.9)
- Tin Cans: 1,250 lbs. (5.5)
- HDPE: 1,125 lbs. (3.4)
- PET: 1,000 lbs. (2.5)
