The Importance of Manufacturing
Manufacturing Week is celebrated all across the United States this week, culminating in Manufacturing Day annually on the first Friday in October. It was established as a way to recognize the economic importance of manufacturing within our communities and schools.
In thinking about the importance of manufacturing, we’re reminded of the illuminating essay, Report On Manufactures, written by one of our favorite American personalities and authors.
Here is an excerpt from that essay:
“It is now proper to proceed a step further, and to enumerate the principal circumstances from which it may be inferred that manufacturing establishments not only occasion a positive augmentation of the produce and revenue of the society, but that they contribute essentially to rendering them greater than they could possibly be, without such establishments. These circumstances are:
- The division of labor.
- An extension of the use of machinery (technology).
- Additional employment to classes of the community not ordinarily engaged in business.
- The promoting of emigration from foreign countries.
- The furnishing greater scope for the diversity of talents and dispositions.
- The affording a more ample and various field for enterprise.
- The creating, in some instances, a new and securing in all a more certain and steady demand for a surplus produce of the soil. (products)
- Each of these circumstances has a considerable influence on the total mass of industrious effort in a community; together they add to it a degree of energy and effect which are not easily conceived.”
-Alexander Hamilton, Report on Manufactures, 1790
Not so coincidentally, all of these things about the importance of manufacturing ring true today. You can almost hear the mic drop…well in his case, the iron gall ink pen drop. Hamilton “nailed it” 230 years ahead of his time!
More Than Meaningful Careers
Manufacturing is so much more than a way to provide meaningful, long-lasting careers with growth opportunity, as important as that is. Manufacturing is absolutely vital to our nation’s economy. It is the catalyst for innovation and positions the United States in a leadership role in the ever-competitive global marketplace. It fosters trade and feeds the growing supply chain demand. Manufacturing is responsible for the development of new products and processes, often copied by other industry sectors. Without it, our nation would be crippled.
During this Manufacturing Week, take a moment and think about how far our country has come since the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th century and the current technological revolution taking place today. Please take the time to celebrate, promote, and encourage manufacturers and their employees in your community.
