Harmony Recycling Market Pulse: Updated Weekly!
MONDAY MARKET PULSE | OCTOBER 12–16, 2026
OCC
Old corrugated containers continue to enter mid-October from a stronger pricing position than earlier this summer. The latest verified national average is approximately $90 per ton, following gains in both August and September. That represents a significant recovery from earlier in the year and provides encouraging momentum for cardboard recycling operations.
Mixed Paper
Mixed paper has also benefited from recent improvements in recovered fiber pricing. The latest reported national average remains in the $35–$40 per ton range, following consecutive monthly increases. While values remain below those of higher-grade recovered papers, the recent improvement reinforces the importance of producing clean, well-sorted material.
PET
PET continues to face challenging market conditions. The latest verified national average for post-consumer PET bottles and jars is approximately 2.61 cents per pound, compared with 5.09 cents per pound a year earlier. With values remaining depressed, efficient collection, processing, and transportation are particularly important for operations handling this commodity.
Aluminum UBC
Aluminum beverage cans remain one of the strongest-value commodities in the curbside recycling stream. The latest reported national average for sorted and baled UBCs is approximately 96.56 cents per pound, compared with 78.44 cents per pound a year earlier. Stronger aluminum values continue to make effective material recovery and separation especially valuable.
Steel Cans
Sorted and baled steel cans have demonstrated considerable pricing stability in recent reporting periods. The latest verified national average remains approximately $198 per ton, compared with $158 per ton one year earlier. This relative stability provides an encouraging contrast to the greater pricing volatility affecting some recovered plastics.
Overall Market
As October progresses, recovered fiber and metals remain the strongest performers among the major curbside recyclable commodities, based on the latest available national reporting. OCC and mixed paper have shown encouraging gains, aluminum continues to deliver substantial value, and steel cans remain comparatively stable. PET, however, continues to face significant pricing pressure.
For recycling operations, these differences reinforce the value of efficient processing, reduced contamination, and properly prepared recyclable materials. Regardless of commodity price fluctuations, producing clean, dense, marketable material remains essential to improving operational efficiency and maximizing recycling revenue.
Pricing reflects the latest verified national averages published September 9, 2026, rather than new October quotations. Market conditions and pricing can vary by region, material quality, volume, transportation costs, and individual buyer or mill agreements.
