When owners Chloe Chloé and Jay Dolata first envisioned what Elroy’s would become, they wanted to build a market that was the whole package: A beautiful store that not only sold incredible foods, but also prioritized environmental and social responsibility, all while serving as a vibrant community market and hangout. The result has been a a welcoming and modern store complete with community bar and indoor/outdoor seating, unmatched customer service and concierge, and a commitment to supporting environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and BIPOC- and women-owned businesses.
The standard of quality established at Elroy’s ensures a positive customer experience. They go through the work of tasting and testing every product before it is allowed to be sold in their market. Through this process, they have banned 47 “nasty” chemicals from their product line, helping to promote good health and environmental sustainability.
Like most small businesses, Elroy’s growth and prosperity created unique challenges with waste handling and recycling. As a grocer offering so many fresh farmers-market produce, bulk food, fresh meat, and fine cheese options, there was naturally an increase of cardboard boxes that needed to be recycled. Rather than add to growing waste in the landfill and emissions given off by extra trips of hauling trucks, Elroy’s reached out to Harmony for a recycling baler for their cardboard.

Harmony’s helpful sales team worked with the staff at Elroy’s, using our Proven Process. They listened to the needs of the small grocer, proposed the right solution for them, and helped them implement that solution in a seamless integration.
For Elroy’s the solution was a Harmony M30STD Vertical Baler. This dynamic small baler is ideal for small grocers, taking up little backroom space, and creating manageable 24″ x 30″ x ≤ 25″ bales weight up to 145 lbs. This allows them to easily maneuver them throughout their facility for storage and transport.

“Before implementing the M30STD, we had an overflowing dumpster of cardboard that required two disposal calls per week. Now that we’re producing 2-3 bales per week, our waste area behind the store is much neater and safer. The cost of cardboard disposal has decreased by about $50 per week, which is a huge deal to a new small business like us. The bales themselves are such a manageable size that we can use a furniture dolly to transport them across the alley to await pickup, and can be made easily and safely by our smallest employee!”
