STEAM Week At Harmony

Throughout the year, Harmony Kids Learning Center (HKLC) provides week-long learning units for its students.  These units involve local professionals teaching all ages of day care students about a variety of topics that reinforce their core curriculum. The children especially look forward to STEAM week at Harmony every August. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.  This year, the students learned all about the technology, equipment, and techniques needed for Harmony Enterprises to make their quality balers and compactors.

Due to the need for social distancing and safety, the staff at HKLC and Harmony Enterprises had to come up with alternative ways to demonstrate the use of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics on the production floor. They had to come up with new steam week technology at Harmony!

To do this, HKLC Director Emily Wilson and teacher Kinzee Hovey set up a video stream with Harmony Enterprises’ New Business Development Manager, Lane Powell.  The students gathered in the safety of their classroom areas of the learning center while Mr. Powell took them on a virtual tour of the facility.

What Did They Learn About?

During the tour, the kids learned about the components needed to make waste and recycling equipment, like US made steel, UL listed electrical parts, Allen Bradley PLC’s, and direct-to-metal paint.  They also were shown how Harmony Enterprises’ dedicated employees use their experienced craftsmanship in engineering, fabricating, welding, painting, assembling, and shipping our innovative solutions. Lastly, the kids saw first-hand how other machines like press brakes, plasma tables, saws, hoists, welding torches, paint booths, and more help our employees to do their job efficiently and safely.

It’s fun for the kiddos who have parents that work over there to see what they are doing.  I have a couple in my class whose parents work there, so I see it first hand!”
