STEAM WEEK 2022 AT HARMONY
Each year, Harmony Kids Learning Center teams up with employees at Harmony Enterprises, Inc. to provide young students with curriculum to coincide with STEAM week. The areas of focus for STEAM week 2022 include science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. According to HKLC teacher Kinzee Hovey, “Every year, this unit opens up a world of creativity and thought for the students. It’s awesome to see their curiosity about the great STEAM things and manufacturing happening at Harmony Enterprises!”
Learning About Recycling vs. Waste
During the week of August 8th, students from HKLC took a trip to Harmony Enterprises. There, New Business Development Manager, Lane Powell taught the children about the differences between waste handling and recycling.
Students learned about commodities that businesses recycle for revenue like cardboard, newspaper, plastics, PET, shrink wrap, aluminum, non-ferrous metal, and more! They were shown how recycling balers help to reduce the footprint and secure these valuable recyclables in a bale to be transported to recycling centers.
They also learned that some things cannot be recycled. Things like garbage, food waste, used paper plates, paper towels, ceramics, kitchenware, windows, and construction waste are typically compacted into small cubes of trash and hauled to waste facilities like landfills. The students learned about how trash compactors not only reduce the waste footprint, but how they also reduce hauling emissions, vermin, odor, and pilferage.
Full STEAM Ahead!
After learning about waste and recycling, the students took a tour of Harmony Enterprises’ production facility and saw first-hand how recycling balers and trash compactors are built from start to finish. They learned about engineering, fabrication, welding, paint, electrical boxes, assembly of motors and pumps, and shipping.
Some of the students even got to see their parent hard at work, as many of our talented employees take advantage of the amazing child care benefits provided by Harmony!
Following the tour, each student was give an STEAM packet to compete back in their HKLC classrooms. The packets included coloring of balers and compactors, as well as the opportunity to draw and color their own waste and recycling inventions, along with a colorful ruler helping them keep their drawing elements straight and to scale. Who knows, maybe a future Harmony Enterprises Engineer just made their first innovative design in their STEAM packet!
