A Flurry Of Activity
During the past several weeks, while most of us in Minnesota were dodging the parade of spring snowstorms, students at St. Ambrose Catholic School of Woodbury were busy creating a flurry of their own learning about entrepreneurship.
This is not the first time that these youngsters have been exposed to real world business education. Nick Roberts, National Sales Manager for Harmony Enterprises, has been partnering with Junior Achievement in the school for the past three years.
Few companies are supportive of their sales department leaving their work on five separate occasions to impart first-hand knowledge and experience within local schools. After all, Sales Managers are the ones who solidify business relationships and secure revenue for the company!
On the other hand, Harmony Enterprises is not your everyday manufacturer of recycling equipment. Just as it strives to provide waste handling and recycling solutions, it encourages its employees to live its Core Focus of Career, Community, and Culture. Harmony practices its belief in the inherent value of sharing its own success with the greater community.
This year, the students in Mrs. Hrabe’s 5th grade classroom at St. Ambrose were able to benefit from five different sessions that focused on a variety of contemporary topics. They included:
- Identifying the characteristics of a free market economy.
- Defining entrepreneurship and exploring innovation.
- Understanding that businesses need people with technical skills to support high-growth, high-demand jobs.
- Introducing career clusters.
- Exploring how the United States is tied to the global economy.
Teaching Business Through Core Values
What is even more unique about this particular experience is that Mr. Roberts purposefully incorporated Harmony’s Core Values into each lesson. In essence, he was teaching business through core values.
All of these areas of business education allowed Nick to touch on each of Harmony’s Core Values that include Commitment, Passion, Innovation, Enhancing Our Shared Experience, and The Courage To Make A Difference.
While expanding on how businesses demand workers with problem solving skills, he shared Harmony’s Core Values Video to show what it would take to work for Harmony Enterprises.
“It is important to cover the fundamentals of business, economics, and entrepreneurship. It is just important to demonstrate to these students what will make them marketable as employees,” Mr. Roberts stated.
“Today’s employers are desperately trying to attract and retain talented individuals who can work with others, think outside of the box, and mitigate hurdles to create successful outcomes. Showing the kids how Harmony Enterprises uses its Core Values in all aspects of its business is a way for them to easily grasp this important concept.”
Harmony Enterprises would like to thank Mr. Roberts, Junior Achievement, and St. Ambrose Catholic School of Woodbury for allowing our Core Values and business model to be positive examples for future entrepreneurs.
