At It Again…
This is not the first year that Harmony’s National Sales Manager, Nick Roberts, has shared his expertise with youth in his native Woodbury, MN. In his fourth year as a Junior Achievement Volunteer, Mr. Roberts has taught valuable lessons about business topics such as how a city works, entrepreneurship, and teaching business through core values.
Mr. Roberts’ contemporary curriculum is one of the most far reaching lessons that students in Mr. Herzog’s 6th grade class at Saint Ambrose Catholic School in Woodbury, MN, have learned to date. This year’s JA topic is “JA Global Marketplace.”
The Global Marketplace
As just about any 6th grader can tell you, the world is getting smaller with greater connectivity and immediate availability of goods and services at the click of a button. Gone are the days where economic ecosystems can exist, relying solely on local participation in limited regions. So many aspects of the greater supply chain are interdependent on each other across the globe. We are all forced to think and act beyond the comforts of our own culture, currency, or geographic borders.
Not only that, but it is difficult to turn on any media source and not hear about current events involving trade agreements and tariffs, labor disputes, global financial market swings, or forecasting of supply and demand of products. The far reaching lessons provided through the JA Global Marketplace classes are both current and relevant to any type of career or consumer role these young people will be a part of as adults.
Far Reaching Lessons
JA Global Marketplace provides information about the importance of international trade, what makes world trade work, and how trade affects students’ daily lives. During the six session series the students focused on the following aspects of the global economy:
- International Markets
- International Law
- International Cultural Exchange
- International Flow Of Human Resources
- International Flow Of Information
- International Flow Of Financial Capital
Each one of these topics stands alone as a fluid issue that demands understanding and attention in today’s economy. More importantly, each one of these is interdependent on another for the entire global marketplace to work.
