How Does an Industrial Compactor Work?
All Industrial Compactors work generally in the same way. Waste is deposited into the compactor until it is full and no more waste can be added. An operator runs the compactor, engaging the ram to push the trash into an attached container. The ram extends a certain depth into the container, compacting the waste into a much smaller volume. When the container can hold no more compacted trash, a waste hauler is contacted to empty the contents of the container and haul it away. The process begins all over again.
There is a proven ROI with Industrial Compactors as they help to reduce costs associated with hauling, operational space, vermin, odor, pilfering, and fire hazards.
What to Look for in an Industrial Compactor
There are two basic types of Industrial Compactors: Stationary Compactors, and Self-Contained Compactors.
Stationary Compactors are used when there is dry waste, such as wood, metal, and other non-recyclable materials that need to be disposed of. They are usually anchored to the ground in a fixed position. When emptied, the container is removed from the compactor and the waste is dumped and hauled away.
Self-Contained Compactors are used when there is liquid present in the waste. The compactor is permanently attached to the container and there is often a sump system to remove the liquid waste safely. When the unit is full, the entire compactor is loaded onto a truck to be taken to the landfill.
The configuration used to dump the waste into your compactor can vary greatly, depending on the physical space available, the type of waste being dumped, and the volume of waste being deposited. There are ground fed, chute fed, hoppers, doghouses, walk-on decks, and loading docks. This helpful blog can help you with understanding compactor configurations.
The size of the container also makes a difference, depending on the size of the industrial compactor, type of waste, volume of waste, and the frequency in which the hauler will be picking up the container. Many compactors use 2, 4, 6, or 8 yard containers, but larger operations use 20-40 yard containers for greater efficiency.
